Radon Fan Making Noise? What Each Sound Means — and When to Replace It

A radon fan runs 24 hours a day, every day, for years — so when it starts making a new sound, you notice. Some sounds are harmless. Some mean a part is wearing out. And one “sound” — silence — means your home isn't being protected at all. Here's how to read each one, with the fixes.

What a Healthy Radon Fan Sounds Like

RadonAway's installation manual states that its Pro Series fans, when installed properly, operate with “little or no noticeable noise to the building occupants.” Fan manufacturer Festa Radon describes a working radon fan as producing “a steady humming or whirring sound.” CARST agrees: many radon fans are very quiet, and for louder systems a C-NRPP certified mitigation professional can help find a solution. A steady, unchanging low hum near the fan is normal — what matters is change.

Sound by Sound: What It Means

Grinding, rattling, or squealing — likely worn bearings

Festa Radon's troubleshooting guidance is direct: strange noises such as rattling or grinding can indicate the bearings inside the fan have gone bad, and loud vibrations or a grinding/squealing noise mean the bearings are likely worn down. Radon fans are sealed units — RadonAway's manual states there are “no user serviceable parts located inside the fan unit” and warns not to open the housing — attempted repairs or alterations void the warranty. When bearings go, the fix is a replacement fan — Festa recommends the same size and model as the old one. Vibration or buzzing through the house — usually the installation, not the fan

RadonAway's tech guidance says vibration after installation “is often the result of the installation and not the fan itself.” Its manual requires that a pipe-mounted fan not contact any building surface, and directs installers to complete the piping with flexible rubber couplings — which exist precisely for vibration isolation and easy service disconnect. If your fan hums through the framing, check for pipe or housing contact with the structure, and make sure the fan is hung on flexible couplings rather than hard-glued in.

Gurgling or water sounds — condensation in the pipe

RadonAway documents that condensation which can't drain down the pipe accumulates in the pipe or fan and creates “gurgling noises or fan problems.” The system must let water drain back to the suction point: the fan mounted vertically and plumb with the outlet up, and piping sloped so condensate runs home. RadonAway publishes minimum pitch guidance (for 4" pipe: 1/8" of rise per foot at 25 CFM, more at higher airflow — manufacturer guidance, not code). Rushing air at the discharge — airflow noise, not a fault

RadonAway notes that in some cases the rushing sound of outlet air “may be disturbing” and recommends an exhaust muffler, installed at the end of the vent pipe. Duct routing matters too — the shortest, straightest run is the quietest — and 4" pipe can run quieter than 3" thanks to lower air velocity. Silence — the sound that actually matters

Health Canada is unambiguous: the fan must never be turned off — “it must run continuously for the system to work properly.” An active system works by reversing the pressure difference between house and soil — with the fan stopped, the system no longer depressurizes the sub-slab and no longer reduces radon entry. Check the u-tube manometer: fluid sitting at equal levels on both sides means the system is not working; unequal levels confirm suction. RadonAway's instructions require a system monitor — a manometer or audible alarm — to notify occupants of a fan malfunction. How Long Do Radon Fans Last?

Health Canada's guide says fan lifespan “can vary between five to ten or more years.” Festa Radon says the same: most radon mitigation fans last between 5 and 10 years. RadonAway doesn't publish a lifespan figure — what it publishes is warranty: 12 months standard, extended to 5 years with installation by a professional radon mitigation contractor (offered in Canada and the continental US). A fan several years past warranty that starts grinding has given you its service life — replace it rather than nursing it.
