Selecting a radon fan isn't about picking the most powerful option — it's about matching the fan's airflow and pressure characteristics to your specific sub-slab conditions. An undersized fan won't achieve adequate suction; an oversized fan wastes energy. Here's how to think through the decision.

Key Variables That Determine Fan Selection

1. Sub-Slab Soil or Fill Type

The material under your concrete slab determines how easily air (and radon) can move through it. This has the largest influence on fan selection.

  • Coarse gravel or crushed stone: High permeability — air flows freely. A lower-pressure fan is usually sufficient.
  • Sand or mixed fill: Moderate permeability — mid-range fans work well.
  • Dense clay, packed soil, or tight fill: Low permeability — higher-pressure fans required to maintain adequate suction across the slab.

If you're unsure what's under your slab, a mitigator or home inspector can do a diagnostic test using a vacuum gauge after drilling a small test hole.

2. Pipe Run Length and Complexity

Every foot of pipe and every 90° elbow adds resistance (friction loss). Longer runs and more bends require more fan pressure to overcome. As a rough guide, each 90° elbow is equivalent to approximately 5–10 feet of straight pipe.

3. System Configuration

Single suction point systems with short, simple pipe runs can use smaller fans. Multiple suction points, longer exterior runs, or larger slab areas may call for a higher-capacity unit.
